Avocados can be grown from seeds or from seedlings. Grafting improves the variety by increasing its resistance to diseases, improving yield and increasing its adaptability to different soils. The planting material should be inspected by relevant personnel to ensure they are free from diseases. Seeds should be treated with hot water not exceeding 50C
Kenya Hass Avocados mature for picking between March to September. It is important to know how to identify the correct harvesting period because avocados are harvested raw and ripen off the tree. Harvest a few fruits and keep them in favourable conditions to ripen. If the fruits ripen evenly, they can be considered to have been mature. Careful picking of similar fruits from the trees can now commence.
Avocados are high in monounsaturated fats, the "good" type of fat linked to several health benefits. Fat from avocados can help the body better absorb vitamins A, D, K, and E from other foods. This amazing fruit is also a good source of fiber, vitamins, and minerals, including vitamin K, folate, and copper.

Firm = 4-5 days to ripen
at room temperature
Ripe = good for 3-5 days
in the refrigerator
Avocado ripeness is not always indicated by the fruit’s color. To determine ripeness, place avocado in the palm of your hand and gently squeeze. Refrain from applying pressure with your fingertips as this can cause bruising. If the avocado gives to firm gentle pressure, then it is ripe and ready to eat.
If you follow these steps and the avocado does not give to gentle pressure, it is considered “firm” and will ripen in a couple of days.
If an avocado feels very soft and almost mushy to the touch, it may be considered overripe or unsafe to eat.
To slow down the ripening process, place ripe avocados in the refrigerator.
If you have half an avocado left over, keep the pit attached to that side, seal in an airtight container, and store in the refrigerator until later use.
